Although Google is the king of search advertising, history tells us that the company wasn’t the first to deploy the “paid-ads-next-to-organic-listings” model. This distinction goes to Overture, who in 1998 became the first to charge advertisers to appear among natural search results. A quality

A recent update to the Google Adwords Help Center outlines the types of business models Google will assign a low quality score. A quality score is the output of Google’s calculation that determines the minimal starting amount an advertiser must bid on a keyword. Landing pages with a high quality score pay less per click; Landing pages with a low quality score pay more per click. Google states it will assign low quality scores to business models that focus on data collection for the purpose of resale, comparison shopping sites, and sites that blatantly host malware -to name a few. And Google isn’t kidding about smacking landing pages of these business model types with low quality score – I’ve seen it for myself.
